The Western Carolina University Program for the Study of Developed Shorelines is extensively involved with hazard mapping projects along the Atlantic coastline. In addition to being an integral feature of the "Living with the Shore" book series, PSDS coastal hazard maps are also being used for risk assessment and hazard mitigation planning.
Three types of maps are currently available from this page:
- North Carolina Hazard Maps developed in 1997.
- South Carolina Hazard Maps developed in 1997.
- Mainland hurricane hazard maps developed in 1999.
GIS-based coastal hazard maps of Nags Head, Atlantic Beach, North Topsail Beach, Carolina Beach and Ocean Isle Beach, developed as part of the North Carolina State Hazard Mitigation Planning Initiative (HMPI), will be available soon.
