Choral ensembles to give free performance Sept. 30
9/22/2008 - The choral ensembles at Western Carolina University will perform in concert at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30, in the Coulter Building Recital Hall.

The University Chorus, Early Music Ensemble and Concert Choir, all under the direction of Robert Holquist, professor of music and director of choral activities, will perform. The concert is free, and the public is invited.

The 65-member University Chorus selections include “Native American Prayer,” the spiritual “Sit Down, Servant!,” Copland’s “Ching a Ring Chaw” and Stan Pethel’s gospel “Saved by Grace.” Freshman music education major Carmen Ramsey will accompany.

The 15-member Early Music Ensemble will perform four madrigals from the Renaissance era, including “Spring Returns,” by Marenzio, and “The Cricket,” by Des Prez.

In addition to “Fair Daffodils” and “Flower of Beauty,” the 49-member Concert Choir will perform “Cindy,” by Mack Wilberg, a piece that includes xylophone, tambourine, woodblock, string bass and four-hand piano. Abigail Roper, freshman music education major, will accompany the choir. Assisting her will be Megan Gillette, a senior nursing student who has played for the University Chorus for four years.

At concert’s end, the University Chorus and Concert Choir will perform Pachelbel’s “Sing a New Song” and Williams’ “Alleluia.” The grand finale, “Only in a Dream,” by David Earnest, is a statement of faith in the goodness of mankind and the ability for humans to improve and enrich life.
