Hey Folks!
I’m sure everyone is aware of the gasoline shortage that is impacting Western Carolina. One of the regional community colleges has decided to suspend classes for the next several days, and other businesses or schools may follow suit. WCU has been closely following this situation. Over the last couple of days, I’ve heard from many students concerned about the situation. I’ve also been stuck in one of those long lines waiting for gas. It’s a tough situation, but hopefully it will be resolved soon.
It appears that at this point the supplies to this part of the state will improve over the next few days. Since WCU is a residential university with most students living on-campus or in the Cullowhee area, we expect to continue offering classes and events as scheduled. This includes all the festivities lined up for Mountain Heritage Day, scheduled for this weekend.
However, we recognize that some students and faculty are running into problems buying gas for their commute to classes. Accordingly, students and faculty are encouraged to use the guidelines outlined in the University’s general weather policy as a model for the current situation. You can find this policy at http://www.wcu.edu/weather/ Students should contact their instructors if they are experiencing difficulties in getting to class due to the gasoline shortage. Your faculty members are being encouraged to be flexible with students whenever possible and reasonable.
Unfortunately, I’m afraid we’re in a difficult situation for the next couple of days and will have to wait out this shortage. In the meantime, I’d offer students a couple of suggestions to cut down on your driving and conserve gas:
First, if you live on-campus or nearby, leave your car parked and enjoy this weekend on-campus. Mountain Heritage Day is this weekend and numerous activities and events are scheduled: http://www.mountainheritageday.com/ In addition, the UC is adding an extra 10:30pm showing of the movie in the theater with snacks on Friday night and a talent show is being scheduled for Saturday night. Stay home at WCU again this weekend and look for the extra activities!
Second, I’m not sure how many folks take advantage of this service, but there is an on-line rideshare tool: http://www.wcu.edu/studenthomepage/rideboard/ If you must take a trip this weekend or if you are commuting from Asheville, etc., maybe this service can help you connect with someone to carpool with you.
In closing, please know that if we have any new information or updates, WCU will get the word out as soon as possible via email, these notes, etc. In the meantime, I hope you can make plans to conserve your gasoline by staying on-campus and enjoying a great weekend in Cullowhee!
As always, email those questions, comments and suggestions to: vc-notes@wcu.edu Go Cats!
Take care! - Old Doc Sam
