The free program will consist of original wind music from that turbulent decade, said John T. West, WCU director of bands.
The first half of the program will feature the ensemble performing traditional band classics, opening with the tone poem “Mannin Veen” by British composer Haydn Wood. “The piece is a tribute to the composer’s boyhood home on the Isle of Man, a small island between Ireland and England,” said West, who will serve as conductor for the concert. “This beautiful work has become a staple of the band repertoire and was later arranged for orchestra by the composer.”
Other works planned for the first half of the concert include Gordon Jacob’s “William Byrd Suite,” Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Toccata Marziale” and John Philip Sousa’s march “The Gallant Seventh.”
After a brief intermission, the second half of the program will consist of Igor Stravinsky’s “Concerto for Piano and Wind Instruments,” featuring soloist Bradley Martin, assistant professor of music at WCU and director of the musical theatre program. The accompanying ensemble will be composed of students and faculty members from WCU’s School of Music.
