Domestic violence photos on exhibit Nov. 6-22
10/16/2008 - A collection of photographs of domestic violence will be on exhibit from Thursday, Nov. 6, through Saturday, Nov. 22, at the Fine Art Museum at Western Carolina University.

The Fine Art Museum is hosting “Living with the Enemy,” a collection of 47 black-and-white images by Donna Ferrato, in conjunction with REACH of Jackson and Macon counties, sister nonprofits that serve victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse. The photo entitled “Rita,” below right, is part of the exhibit.

“Domestic violence is a tragic social dilemma, not only nationally and internationally, but right here in our own community,” said Martin DeWitt, founding director of the Fine Art Museum. “Donna Ferrato’s photographs document the hard facts in stark reality and are images to provoke a dialogue and to take action.”
“Rita,” a black-and-white photograph by Donna Ferrato, is part of the exhibit “Living with the Enemy.”
An exhibit called “Healing and Art” will run concurrently in the adjoining Fine and Performing Arts Center Star Lobby. It features the work of three regional artists: figurative painter Diane McPhail of Highlands; landscape painter Jenean Hornbuckle of Cherokee; and Luzene Hill of Whittier, whose drawings, in book format, are a response to being a victim of violence. Three vitreographic prints by the late feminist Hollis Sigler of Chicago also are part of that exhibit.

At 6 p.m. Nov. 6 in Room 130 of FAPAC, Ferrato and representatives from REACH and WCU’s Women’s Center will hold a panel discussion on domestic violence. A reception for “Living with the Enemy” will follow in the Fine Art Museum. The panel discussion and reception are free and open to the public.

“It’s this kind of collaboration that one day will help to make every home a safe home in our communities,” said Sandy Frazier, development director for REACH.

Ferrato earned degrees in sociology and photography at the San Francisco Art Institute and has photographed professionally for more than 20 years. “Living with the Enemy: The Photographs of Donna Ferrato” developed after Ferrato witnessed a man beat his wife in 1985 while on assignment for a magazine article. She began documenting the effects of domestic violence on women, men, children and communities by photographing in hospital emergency rooms, shelters and domestic abuse classes across the country. In 1991, Ferrato founded Domestic Abuse Awareness Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to ending violence against women and children. The organization has sent the “Living with the Enemy” exhibit to more than 100 venues worldwide.

Other upcoming WCU events related to domestic violence awareness are:

- Silent art auction, Thursday, Nov. 6 through Wednesday, Nov. 19, in the Star Lobby. Accompanying the “Healing and Art” exhibit, and sponsored by REACH of Jackson and Macon counties, this auction of work by regional artists is a fundraiser to support children and adults at risk of abuse.

- The Clothesline Project, 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19, in the FAPAC courtyard. Sponsored by the Women’s Center, this traveling testimony to the issue of violence against women allows survivors to express their emotions through art.

- The Smothers Brothers, 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19, in FAPAC. This appearance by American music-and-comedy team Tommy and Dick Smothers is a benefit for REACH.
