Western Carolina University Chancellor John W. Bardo released the following statement on Thursday, Oct. 23, regarding the investigation into the bear incident on WCU’s campus:
“I want to make you aware that the investigation continues into Monday’s incident involving placement of the bear carcass at the entrance to campus.
The seven students involved have now been interviewed by campus police, the Secret Service, and N.C. Wildlife Resources officers. Findings have been provided to the N.C. District Attorney, who will determine whether criminal charges are warranted, and campus police continue to be in contact with him. When the investigation is concluded, university officials will immediately review this matter for violations of the Student Code of Conduct and the students involved will be subject to that process.
This unfortunate act has upset many members of our university community. I hope that each of us will be particularly sensitive to the views and concerns of others, and that we remember our core institutional values of inclusiveness and civil discourse, as we go forward.”
