Western Carolina University is among American colleges and universities featured in the 2008-09 edition of “Colleges of Distinction,” a guide for prospective students that focuses on four areas of academic quality – student engagement, great teaching, vibrant communities, and successful outcomes.
“The schools in this group are some of the very best in the country. Some are household names. Some are hidden gems. What they all share is that they are great places to get an education,” said Wesley L. Creel, president and founder of “Colleges of Distinction.”
The guide’s profile of WCU states that “most of WCU’s academic programs include a strong element of experiential learning, including internships, co-ops, and other activities that allow students to apply what they learn in class to experiences that build both competence and confidence. Students are attracted not only by the university’s vibrant Honors College and WCU’s wide range of academic programs, but also by Western’s small class sizes, close interaction with faculty, and beautiful mountain campus.”
WCU Provost Kyle Carter said the university’s students, faculty and staff can take pride in the fact that WCU has been recognized in the national review. “It’s gratifying that others are discovering the value and quality of our academic programs,” he said. “WCU is producing satisfied and competent students who are making a positive impact in the world.”
Colleges profiled in “Colleges of Distinction” were chosen based on the opinions of guidance counselors, educators and admissions professionals. The guide is a publication of Student Horizons Inc., a digital services company based in Bethesda, Md.
