Western Carolina University will offer three sessions of youth swim review this spring in the Breese Gymnasium pool.
A beginner class will be offered in two levels, based on an assessment of skill development, from 5:30 to 6:20 p.m., Monday March 23, through Friday, March 27.
The beginner class includes water exploration and primary skills, and is appropriate for children age 5 and above who can be in the pool alone.
Based on skill assessment, other activities may include bobbing, holding breath underwater, rhythmic breathing, floating, prone glide, back glide, underwater glide, leg kicks and arm mechanics as well as proper head position for rhythmic breathing, improving leg kicks and arm mechanics, improving swim technique, learning survival floating and acclamation to deep water.
An advanced beginner class will be held from 6:30 to 7:20 p.m. March 23-27.
Skills for advanced beginners will include bobbing in deep water, jumping off the diving board, improvement of rhythmic breathing to side, survival floating for two minutes, underwater swimming stroke improvement and testing drills.
A swim class for exceptional children will be held from 5:40 to 6:30 p.m., Monday, April 27, through Friday, May 1. This class is specifically designed for children enrolled in or eligible for the exceptional children’s program in public schools.
Students in the exceptional swim course must be accompanied in the pool by a parent or guardian.
Michael Creason, instructor for the programs, is retired as an assistant professor in the department of health, physical education and recreation at WCU. He is certified by the American Red Cross to teach infants and children and has been a swimming instructor for more than 30 years.
The cost of the beginner or advanced beginner class is $39. The cost of the exceptional swim class is $35. Preregistration one week before the class is required.
