What Leadership Courses are available?

HR 140 Freshman Leadership Institute: Introduces a theoretical framework for understanding leadership and followership, while participating in a learning community. Students experience the personal discovery of leadership potential and commitment. PREQ: Acceptance into the Freshman Leadership Living–Learning Institute and housing. (Fall Semester Only – 2 Unit)

HR 141 Resident Advisor Leadership: The class is designed to create educated, ethically and morally responsible, fully functioning leaders who contribute to the residence halls, local community, and global society. (Must be accepted as an RA through Residence Life – 1 Unit)

HR 142 Peer Education Leadership: Current wellness concerns of today’s college students. Translates learning into becoming peer educators and campus leaders through outreach, event planning, and optional participation in C.L.A.W. & C.R.E.W. (1 Unit)

HR 143 Emerging Leaders: An interactive learning experience introducing leadership and organization theory and the Social Change Model, while encouraging participation in a context of personal and leadership knowledge. (1 Unit)

HR 145 Student Leadership for Campus Service and Programming: The Social Change Model of leadership relationship to student leadership for: Last Minute Productions programming; or University Center, Base Camp Cullowhee, and Ramsey Center student staff. (1 Unit)

HR 146 Emerging Greek Leaders: Provides new members of WCU Greek organizations opportunities to explore leadership within the Social Change Model from a experiential context of organizational membership, Greek community diversity and culture, and national organizations values and impact agreements. (1 Unit)

HR 147 Leadership for Understanding and Promoting Non-Violence and Social Change: Designed to educate students about domestic violence and preventative measures while exploring leadership for associated issues within the context of the Social Change Model. (1 Unit)

HR 148 SGA - Leadership Principles: Fundamentals of student leadership; covers leadership theory, parliamentary law, committee techniques, democratic organization, principles and functions of student government, and group problems. (1 Unit)

HR 149 Women, Leadership, and Social Change:  This course will focus on women’s leadership and service as it relates to personal development and campus involvement through a lens of social change. (1 Unit)

HR 150 – Leadership for Fitness Center and Intramurals Staff: Overview of leadership in relation to fitness and recreation, providing the student opportunity to practice leadership skills and analyze challenges in leading associated activities. (1 Unit)

HR 155 – Advanced Student Leadership for Campus Service and Programming: Techniques of management and leadership for: Last Minute Productions programming; or University Center, Base Camp Cullowhee, and Ramsey Center student staff. (1 Unit)

HR 180 Freshman Leadership Institute: Continues the theoretical framework for understanding leadership while participating in a learning community. Students experience and apply their personal discovery of leadership potential and commitment. PREQ: Completion of HR 140 (Spring Semester Only - 2 Units)

HR 241 Orientation Leaders: The Orientation Leaders class is designed to create educated, ethically and morally responsible, fully functioning leaders who can contribute to the success of first-year students at Western Carolina University. (Must apply and be accepted as orientation Leader Team member - 1 Unit)

HR 242 Advanced Peer Education: Introduces a theoretical framework for understanding leadership and followership, while participating in a learning community. Students experience the personal discovery of leadership potential and commitment. PREQ: HR 142 or Permission of Instructor. (1 Unit)

HR 243 Service Learning and Leadership for Social Change: Provides understanding of leadership and social change strategies at the community level, focusing on roles and functions of nonprofit/social service agencies and service-learning participants. PREQ: HR 141 or HR 142 or HR 143 or HR 144 or HR 145 or HR 146 or HR 147 or HR 148 or HR 149 or Permission of Instructor. (1 Unit)

HR 244 Sophomore Leadership Institute: Course design enables practical application of group dynamics utilizing collaboration, common purpose, and group identity. Controversy with civility will provide the lens for conflict management. PREQ - Any other HR Leadership Series Course. (3 Units)

HR 245 Student Media Leadership: Enables students participating in the context of student media to lead using ethical and social change perspectives in peer and community communications. (1 Unit)

HR 246 Advanced Greek Leadership: Advanced Greek Leadership explores the leadership and evolution of the campus Greek community and its relationship to the national organizational structures and university educational mission. PREQ: HR 146 or HR 143 or HR 144 or HR 244 or Permission of instructor. (1 Unit)

HR 247 Student Athlete Leadership: Enables practical application of leadership for athletes through sports team dynamics, personal goal setting, visioning, and the role of student athletes in the university community. (1 Unit)

HR 248 Advanced SGA - Leadership Principles: Advanced techniques and issues for student government leadership. It will cover major themes of creating change, creativity, lobbying, and social group dynamics. PREQ: HR 148 or Permission of Instructor. (1 Unit)

HR 249 Diversity and Leadership: Explore and discuss issues of diversity and leadership such as communication, resolving conflicts, motivation, decision-making, community service, and leadership styles within cultural, ethnic, and religious groupings. (1 Unit)

HR 299 Special Topics In Leadership: This lower division leadership course will be designed based upon a learning contract developed by the student and agreed upon by the sponsoring faculty member. (1-3 units R 2x)

HR 343 Dimensions of Spirituality in Leadership: Course design enhances the student’s relationship with their world and sense of spirituality, their life course and leadership knowledge with the search for meaning and purpose of their actions and decisions. (3 Units)

HR 344 Junior Leadership Seminar: Explore and discuss issues on ethics and values; decision making from leadership perspective for understanding how leaders shape moral environment in different contexts. PREQ: HR 244 or consent of Instructor.  (3 Units)

HR 345- Leadership for Justice and a Civil Society: Discuss and examine the concept of leadership as service to society for justice and social equity. Students will explore their roles in leadership for social change and transformation distinguishing between justice and charity. PREQ: Any HR Leadership Course or Consent of Instructor (3 Units)

HR 346 - Civic Engagement and Leadership in the Local Community: Students will examine how modern society engenders specific ideas and practices of leadership; explore challenges, obligations, and processes unique to civic engagement and leadership for the 21st century, especially in terms of how leadership and the modern society reorganize the relationships between the individual and society and local and global perspectives.

HR 444 Senior Leadership Forum: Designed to develop student’s awareness and understanding of current issues relating to the nature and tasks of leadership thinking and behavior in the 21st century. PREQ: HR 344 or consent of Instructor (3 Units)

HR 480 Leadership (Minor) Field Experience Internship: The field experience is an internship-based course that requires the students to integrate lessons learned from the core leadership courses into practical leadership situations.

HR 499 Special Topics in Leadership: This upper division leadership course will be designed based upon a learning contract developed by the student and agreed upon by the sponsoring faculty member. (1-3 units R 2x)
