What is Peer Review of Research and Why is it Important?
When research is called peer reviewed it means that individuals who are the professional equals of the person or persons presenting the research have evaluated it. If a journal states that its articles are peer reviewed, that means that experts in the field review the articles before they are published.

For instance, no matter how brilliant Albert Einstein was, he would not have been qualified to review an article in a field in which he was not a specialist.

Peer review helps ensure that research was conducted correctly and is of a high quality.

Most articles in PubMed are peer reviewed. Due to the size of the database - more than 15 million articles - PubMed does not specify which articles are peer reviewed and which are not; however, the majority of articles in the database are peer reviewed.

Academic Search Premier and several other databases give you the option of checking a box to limit your searches to peer reviewed or refereed literature. This is a great option to use.
