WCU broadcaster wins national radio award
3/16/2009 -

A Western Carolina University student will receive a national award for radio production work from the Broadcast Education Association Convention Festival of Media Arts to be held in Las Vegas.

Aaron D’Innocenzi, a WCU junior, won first place for his submission “Aaron Michael Audition CD.” The entry was a compilation of on-air work that D’Innocenzi performed for WWCU-FM, the university radio station, and WQNS-FM, a classic rock radio station in Asheville. D’Innocenzi uses the name Aaron Michael for his on-air personality.

The award will be presented Friday, April 24, by the Broadcast Education Association as a part of its Media Arts Festival, a juried national competition held in conjunction with the National Association of Broadcasters annual convention. This marks the fifth time a WCU student has won a national award in the competition.

D’Innocenzi is the son of John and Lisa D’Innocenzi of Black Mountain and graduated from Charles D. Owen High School.

The BEA is a professional association for professors, industry professionals and graduate students interested in teaching and research related to broadcasting and multimedia enterprises.

“To win top air personality award from the BEA is a great honor, as you are competing with students from up to 275 universities across the country and internationally,” said Don Connelly, head of WCU’s department of communication.

D’Innocenzi attributes his success to the hands-on learning environment at WCU and experience at WQNS. “It’s incredible to see the results of what Don and my bosses in Asheville have taught me,” he said.

WWCU-FM (Power 90.5) is the broadcast service of Western Carolina University and serves the Jackson and Haywood county region. The station also can be heard online at http://www.wwcufm.com/.
