Voice students hit high notes
3/1/2007 -

Thirteen undergraduate and graduate students from Western Carolina University recently participated in the annual spring auditions for the North Carolina chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing.

The auditions, which were held Feb. 16-17 at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, determined who would advance to regional competition later this spring.

Singers were judged by four voice teachers, who provided written feedback about each singer’s performance. Participants who earned an average of at least 25 of the possible 30 points advance to the Mid-Atlantic Regional Student Auditions at the University of Maryland at College Park on April 13-14 and will compete with students from Maryland, the District of Columbia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.

Five WCU students are advancing to the regional event based upon their performances in Greensboro:

Mitchell Hutchings, 2003 graduate of Parkwood High School and son of Cathy Hutchings of Mount Holly, placed first in the college senior men division and performed in the event’s Honors Recital. Hutchings is a senior majoring in music.

Patrick Detloff, 2005 graduate of Myers Park High School and son of Martin Detloff and Sherry Huckabee of Charlotte, also placed first in his division, college men—music theater, and performed in the Honors Recital. Detloff is a freshman majoring in musical theater.

Lance Newman, 2005 graduate of East Wilkes High School and son of Chris and Cindy Newman of Elkin, placed second in the college freshman male division. Newman is a freshman majoring in music education.

Laurel Fisher, 2004 graduate of Mars Hill College and daughter of John and Wanda Fisher of Knoxville, Tenn., is a graduate student working on her master’s degree of music.

Heather Hallmark, 1994 graduate of Eastern Alamance High School and daughter of Jack and Debbra Hallmark of Burlington, is a junior majoring in music.
