Western Carolina University will hold a science fair workshop for science teachers of grades six through 12 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12, in Room 143 of the Camp Building.
The activity-based workshop will focus on science fairs as learning opportunities to introduce students to the possibilities of scientific inquiry. Dee Dee Whitaker and Pamela Lovin, facilitators with the North Carolina Science and Engineering Fair, will discuss the states standard course of study and science fair requirements, including how to navigate the forms required and strategies for their completion.
Participants will learn how to guide students toward projects that meet the requirements for competing in regional science fairs and that meet the judging criteria at the state level. Winners from the 2008 Western Regional Science Fair will discuss their projects and experiences from the N.C. Science and Engineering Fair.
Teachers will receive one-half of a continuing education unit (CEU) for attendance.
Public school educators may attend free of charge, but must preregister by Friday, July 31. The registration fee for all other participants is $35. Lunch and materials are provided.
