Western Carolina University senior Sacha Witt was recently selected to participate in the Eastern Trombone Workshop’s national solo competition.

Witt, son of Richard and Gretchen Witt of Salisbury and a 2003 graduate of East Rowan High School, is a music major at Western, with a concentration in bass trombone performance.

Music students from abroad and across the United States sent audition tapes to the Eastern Trombone Workshop in February. Only the most elite performers, including Witt, were selected to compete in a semi-final round at the national competition, said Daniel Cherry, WCU assistant professor of music.

“I don’t get excited about much, but this is pretty exciting to me. Even if I don’t go on to the final round, at least I know I can get this far,” said Witt.

The national solo competition will take place on March 22 at the U.S. Army Band’s performance center in Fort Myer, Va. The top two performers in each of the competition’s six divisions will perform in a public recital in the final round on March 23.
