WCU is a University of North Carolina Campus
Emergency Medical Care - online, undergrad
Teaching and learning constitute the central mission of Western Carolina University. The University seeks to create a community of scholarship in which the activities of it members are consistent with the highest standards of knowledge and practice in their disciplines. The commitment of the University to service, research and creative activities complements the central mission and extends the benefits of its scholarship to society. As a major public resource for western North Carolina, the University assists agencies in the region through the expertise of its faculty and staff.

WCU’s Emergency medical Care program was established in 1977 and represents the nation’s first paramedic training program leading to the baccalaureate degree. Even today, the EMC program is one of only ten such programs in the nation. The goals of the EMC program are 1) to provide a learning environment that offers the student the cognitive and technical skills necessary for a competent, entry-level paramedic; 2) to provide leadership in the emergency medical care community; and 3) to extend the benefits of the program to outside health care constituencies. As a state university, the principle function of the University and the EMC program is to provide an academic curriculum appropriate to its role and mission, essentially for the benefit of the people of North Carolina. Though state-wide in scope, the University and the EMC program have a special sense of responsibility to the western region of North Carolina.

Western Carolina University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (www.sacscoc.org) to award bachelor's, master's, education specialist, and doctor's degrees.
