A student team from McDowell High School won top honors as Western Carolina University sponsored its 18th annual Computer Science Programming Contest on Tuesday, March 27.
Thirty-four students organized into 13 teams from five Western North Carolina high schools gathered for the competition. Students used the Java programming language, which is the language used in the advanced placement computer science curriculum. Plaques were awarded to the top three teams.
The McDowell High team of Luke Starr, Brandon Ollis and Chris Folger won first place, followed by the Reynolds High School team of Seth Bishop, Chris Gauger and Trent Josephsen in second place, and the West Henderson High School team of Cantley Sheppard and Christopher Jedd in third place.
The McDowell High team was sponsored by Rick Lindsey, the Reynold High team was sponsored by Jeff Wilson, and the West Henderson team was sponsored by Larry Ashcraft.
Students were selected by their schools to compete because of their excellence in computer programming, said Bill Kreahling, assistant professor of computer science and contest co-director.
Students from The Asheville School and Carolina Day School also competed.
The contest was sponsored by WCU’s department of mathematics and computer science.
