British art critic and publisher Derek Guthrie will present a public lecture at Western Carolina University Saturday, April 21.
The lecture, “Performing Monkeys and the Goose that Laid the Golden Egg – The Artist Dances for Postmodernism,” will take place in Room 223 of the Fine and Performing Arts Center at 11 a.m.
The co-founder of the influential art journal The New Art Examiner, Guthrie and his wife Jan Addams Allen nurtured and brought into view a new generation of renowned art critics, said Matthew Liddle, WCU associate professor of art. A book about his influence in the art world is currently being published.
While visiting WCU, Guthrie will be giving critiques to undergraduate art students as well as graduate students in the Master of Fine Arts Program.
Guthrie’s visit is part of the Artist in Residence program sponsored by the Office of the Provost at WCU.
