WCU is a University of North Carolina Campus

The Center for Rapid Product Realization

Optoelectronics is a field that combines optical and electronic devices for applications such as communications (like fiberoptics), sensing (like optical scanners), and displays (like handheld, touch sensitive computers).

In 2006, WCU hosted a CMOT symposium, “Nano-Rapid Prototyping for Photonic Structures.”

Carolinas MicroOptics Triangle

The Carolinas MicroOptics Triangle is a partnership between Clemson University, The University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and Western Carolina University with a collective vision to be a full-service research, educational and business development resource to the optics industry.

CMOT was formed to synergize the technology platforms of the partnership institutions for technology advancement, local education support, support to local companies, and economic development for the region.

WCU’s strengths include engineering design, rapid prototype fabrication, micromachining, bit error rate testing, and optical device testing.
