WCU travel courses available this summer for interested students
2/21/2008 - As spring and summer quickly approach the mountains of Western North Carolina, Western Carolina University is offering an array of travel courses where the world will be the classroom. Students may pick from an extensive variety of classes and destinations, including business survival skills in China, art classes in Europe, and the biological and political sciences of the Great Smoky Mountains and Yellowstone national parks.

Bahamas – “Geology 140: Environments of the Bahamas,” May 12-23. Students will investigate geologic and biologic aspects of carbonate environments from the College of the Bahamas Gerace Research Center of the island of San Salvador. The estimated cost of $1,600 includes roundtrip airfare between Fort Lauderdale and San Salvador, as well as housing, all meals, lab fees, course materials, transportation, taxes and tips in San Salvador.

China – “Hospitality and Tourism 293: International Service Management” or “Business Administration 293: Business Survival Skills in China,” June 3-30. Students will experience the Chinese culture, language, economy and business etiquette while staying in Shanghai, with field trips to Beijing and other locations. Estimated cost is $3,800.

Ecuador – “Nursing 345: International Missionary/Volunteer Nursing,” June 28-July 8. Students will travel to the jungle, coast and mountains as they assist in the setup of temporary medical clinics to serve populations that have no access to medical care. The estimated cost is $1,000 and only a few slots are available.

France and Italy – “Art 493: Foundations of Western Art,” May 12-25. Students will visit treasure houses of European art as well as major international museums and archeological sites, such as the Louvre, Notre Dame de Paris, Sainte-Chapelle and the Pantheon, while researching a predetermined topic. Estimated cost is $2,970.

Germany – “Arts and Sciences Interdisciplinary 393: German Cultural Immersion,” June 7-19. Students will visit Cologne, Hamburg and Berlin while thinking outside the borders through intercultural growth. The estimated cost for the trip is $2,700, which includes airfare, accommodations and ground transportation.

Honduras – “Nursing 345: International Missionary/Volunteer Nursing,” June 14-22. Students will spend time at Mount Carmel Mission Clinic, visit children at a day care, perform physical assessments, distribute and administer medications and perform essential patient education about preventative health care. The estimated cost of $1,309 includes insurance, airfare, accommodations, meals and ground transportation.

Japan – “Arts and Sciences Interdisciplinary 393: Japan Cultural Trip Past and Present,” May 12-26. Students will interact with traditional and modern art and craft in Japan, and view some of the famous 88 temples on the pilgrimages that have made Shikoku island famous. The estimated cost for this trip is $2,650, and only a few slots are available.

Russia and Sweden – “Interior Design 465: Travel Studies in Design,” June 9-19. Students will be immersed in the design and culture of Russia and Sweden by focusing on historical perspective and its impacts on regional architecture, planning, art and design. The estimated cost is $3,350.

Spain – “Spanish 302: Topics of the Hispanic World,” “Spanish 321: Spanish Civilization” and “Spanish 240: Accelerated Second-Year Spanish,” May 23-June 19. Students will attend class daily in Aviles, on the northern coast, and will participate in five full days of excursions to places of historical and cultural significance. The estimated cost is $2,450, which includes tuition, accommodations, all meals, excursions and textbooks.

Yellowstone and Great Smoky Mountains – “Biology 493/593 or Political Science 493/593: Politics in the Park: This Land is Your Land,” May 12-27. Students will explore the biological and political issues surrounding national parks and examine the parks as both natural habitats and governmental programs. The estimated cost is $987, including lodging, food, and some teaching materials.

Western North Carolina – “Parks and Recreational Management 352: Beginner/Intermediate Kayak Course,” May 11-16. Students will learn skills that will enable paddling on local rivers. Estimated cost is $225, which includes sprayskirts, personal flotation devices, paddles and wetsuits, as well as transport to the course.

For all educational trips, payment in full is due by April 1.
