General Questions
Where is the Graduate School located?
The Graduate School is conveniently located near the main entrance to Western's Cullowhee campus. When entering campus, take an immediate right. Then, take your first right across the bridge to the Cordelia Camp Building. Our office is located in 109 Cordelia Camp Building.
Cullowhee is located 45 minutes west of Asheville between the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains, less than 3 hours from Atlanta.

How do I access my WebCat online course?
1. Login to My Cat.
2. Click the WebCat link.

How do I order and pay for my books? Where do I pick them up?
Books may be purchased online through the University Bookstore, or in person. In Asheville, the bookstore is located at Karpen Hall, room 102-A. The bookstore may be reached at (828) 227-7346 or toll free at (866) 272-4102.
Is transportation available to class in Asheville from Cullowhee?
No, we currently have no transportation system in place. However, many students do carpool. A ride board is hosted by the University Center.
Where do I go for help in getting a job in my major?
Many of our programs focus on helping you get a job. Check with your Program Director and visit our Career Services website.
Is student insurance available? If so, how much does it cost?

How long does it take to get a master's degree?
It varies by program but students can typically complete a master's degree in about 2 years.
What is considered full-time graduate studies?
At least 9 hours.
Applying to Graduate Programs
How do I apply to graduate school?
There are two ways to apply to graduate school. You can apply online or you can download an application (PDF). If you apply online you will need to briefly set up a free AY account.
I have a copy of my transcript - will that be sufficient?
No, you will need to request an official copy of your transcript from all of the schools you have attended.
Do I have to pay the application fee if I already have a master's degree from WCU?
No.
Are there deadlines for admission?
There are deadlines for specific programs. For programs without formal deadlines we recommend that you complete the application by no later than 4 to 6 weeks before classes begin.
What are the requirements for admission?
An undergraduate background appropriate for graduate study in the proposed field. An applicant may be required to take additional coursework to strengthen the undergraduate background. A satisfactory score on the standardized graduate test for the program selected (e.g., GRE, GMAT).
Do I have to take the GRE?
You have to take the GRE for most, but not every program. Visit out programs information page.

What score is required on the GRE or GMAT?
You should talk with the appropriate program director. The GRE or GMAT will be one of many factors considered for admission to graduate school.
How do I get in-state residency?
You must have a physical presence in the state for a minimum of 12 months prior to the first day of classes. The burden of proof rests with the individual. If you plan to request in-state residency you should have a NC driver's license, voter registration card, and car registration. How long does it take to be admitted?
Once we receive your completed application, please allow 4-6 weeks for an admissions decision.
Can I be enrolled in two degree programs at the same time?
No.
What do I have to do to re-enroll once I dropped out for a semester?
You must complete a reenrollment application (PDF).
I received an "F" and have been dismissed from Graduate School, can I be readmitted?
You can be readmitted after sitting out the following spring or fall semester. You must apply in writing to be readmitted. See the Graduate Catalog for a complete description of current readmission and academic action procedures.
How do I calculate my GPA, since my program requires me to submit a GPA for the last 60 etc. hours of course work?
Download and fill out the GPA Calculator (XLS). Enter the number of hours you earned at each grade. Some programs require applicants to report GPA on the last 60 hours You may submit this file with your aplication to show GPA on your last 60 hours of undergraduate course work.

How do I pay for graduate school?
There are many ways to pay for graduate school. We offer some "free money" in the form of Chancellor's Fellowships, Study Grants, and tuition waivers. We also provide graduate assistantships. Learn more about paying for graduate school.
Graduate Assistantships
What is a graduate assistantship?
A graduate assistantship is a job. You work 20 hours per week teaching, conducting research, or in some other professional development position on campus. Assistantship salaries range from $7000-$10500. Learn more about graduate assistantships.
Can I get an assistantship if I have another job?
No, you cannot have any other employment than the assistantship.
Is my tuition automatically waived if I receive a graduate assistantship?
No. You must have an assistantship to receive a tuition waiver, but not everyone with an assistantship will get a waiver.
Registration, Program Details, & Graduation
How do I register for classes?
You can register for classes online in My Cat.
Where will my classes be located?
Cullowhee, Asheville, or online depending on the program.
Who is my contact person for the program?

Who do I contact if I want to change my concentration?
Contact your advisor.
What do I do if I don't agree with a grade I receive?
You should talk to your professor. If you still disagree you can talk with the department head (see link for appeals process in Graduate Catalog).
What do I need to do to graduate and prepare for commencement?
You must fill out an application for graduation (PDF). This application should be completed during the semester before you plan to graduate. The application must be turned in to the graduate school by September 15 for December Graduation, February 15 for May Graduation, and May 15 for August Graduation.
How long do I have to complete my degree?
You have six years to complete a master's or education specialist degree. You have five years to complete the Ed.D.
Campus Life
Is there on-campus housing available for graduate students?
Residence Halls are open to graduate students to the extent available. Madison Hall is available for graduate students and Robertson Hall is available for married graduate students.
Are there any graduate student organizations?
Yes, the Graduate Student Association has regular meetings and sponsors events throughout the year.
What are some things to do for graduate students?
The university has a number of activities for undergraduate and graduate students to get involved. Western North Carolina has many outdoor activities including hiking, biking, rafting, and kayaking.
