“The social work department is small enough that you can have a close, personal relationship with the faculty, which is comforting as a student.”
LaRhonda Dowdell
NEWS: The MSW program is now accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). The Department of Social Work received news this week that its MSW program, which accepted its first cohort of students in fall 2006, has received full accreditation. The MSW program admits students each fall and is now offering its four-semester curriculum split between WCU and UNCA (with two of the four semesters taught at each location). The new WCU/UNCA format will take effect with the Fall 2010 cohort of new MSW students. Please see links to the MSW program for more information.
Social Work: A Profession of Value
WCU’s Department of Social Work offers undergraduate and graduate degrees that present you with a variety of career options, from working in social services settings and group homes to private practice, social service management, and administration.
Our challenging curriculum offers classes covering a wide range of topics as well as hands-on experience through the field practicum, the most indispensable component of social work education. This field experience gives you the opportunity to gain practical experience in preparation for professional social work practice.
At WCU, you’ll enjoy a personalized learning environment in a small, intimate setting. Our dedicated faculty will work with you in the classroom and the field to help you gain the knowledge and experience you need to succeed during your time here at Western and throughout your professional career. We offer students groups for both undergraduate and graduate students--ranging from the Phi Alpha Honor Society to the Social Work student organization.
