About the History Department
The Department of History at Western Carolina University has an exciting blend of programs, majors, and opportunities.

You may choose between the bachelor of arts (B.A.) or bachelor of science (B.S.) degree with a major in either history or social sciences. If you are interested in teaching, we recommend the bachelor of art in education with an emphasis in the social sciences. We also offer minor or certificate programs in Appalachian studies, Cherokee studies, and public history.

At the graduate level, we offer a master of arts (M.A.) in history with an emphasis in American, European, public, or Cherokee history.

Regardless of the specific degree program you select, you will have a wide variety of courses to choose from as you enter the fascinating world of the human past. Some of the diverse subjects that you may encounter include ancient Greece and Rome, medieval and modern Europe, Colonial America, Latin America, Atlantic World, modern Asia, women’s history, African-American history, Cherokee history, Appalachian culture, and public history.

If you are considering history as a major, please contact Department Chair Richard Starnes. If you are considering social science education, please contact Program Director Elizabeth McRae. If you are considering a graduate degree in history, please contact Program Director Gael Graham.

If you are a history alumnus, please contact us—we’d love to hear from you.
