Board welcomes new member, says goodbye to longtime trustee Burgin
6/10/2008 - Western Carolina University’s board of trustees welcomed its newest member and bid farewell to a longtime friend as part of its regular quarterly meeting Friday, June 6.

Departing the board is Bob Burgin, retired president and chief executive officer of Mission Hospitals in Asheville, who recently resigned his position as a university trustee.

Frixen, the son of David and Linda Frixen and a 2006 graduate of Butler High School, was officially sworn in as a trustee. As newly elected SGA president, he also serves as an ex-officio member of the WCU board.

“You are the most important member of this board,” Joan MacNeill, board chair, told Frixen after he took the oath of office. “You represent the students. You represent the reason we all are here.”

MacNeill also informed her fellow trustees that Burgin, a member of the board for nearly five years, had announced his decision to step down because family concerns and an increase in out-of-state travel had made it difficult for him to continue being an active member.

“His voice will be missed,” she said. “Bob brought a unique viewpoint and a unique set of qualifications to this board.”

A new board member to fill the vacancy created by Burgin’s resignation will be appointed by the University of North Carolina Board of Governors later this year.
