About the HPER Department
The Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation is a part of the College of Education and Allied Professions at Western Carolina University. Our main office is located in Reid Gym, Room 100. We are dedicated to the professional preparation of majors in two academic areas: parks and recreation management and physical education (undergraduate and graduate).
We offer courses in health, adventure education, swimming, gymnastics, the physiology of exercise, anatomy, first aid, and parks and recreation management. These courses complement the outstanding experiences offered by the region for biking, sports, rafting, climbing, and snow skiing.
HPER has approximately 200 majors, a large number of minors, and a thriving graduate program from which our graduates are actively recruited by employers because of their high quality. Additionally, through our physical education and wellness electives and Liberal Studies offerings, we impact the lives and careers of almost every student at Western Carolina University.
