WCU is a University of North Carolina campus
PE Undergraduate Program
When you major in WCU’s Bachelor of Science in Education (B.S.Ed.) Degree Program in Physical Education, you’ll join a program that has been historically recognized for its outstanding professional preparation of physical educators in North Carolina. The Physical Education Program’s goals are aligned with the Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium standards and the National Association for Sport and Physical Education standards for Beginning Teachers.

Minor Offerings
We also offer minors in coaching and physical education, which are open to anyone except those majoring in the same concentration or program. These minors offer an excellent and enjoyable complement to a range of majors.

Highly Qualified Faculty
Our highly qualified faculty have years of public school teaching and higher education experience. They bring passion and enthusiasm to their teaching and develop close, professional relationships with their students that often carry beyond the classroom and their years at Western. You’ll get the personal attention you need at each stage of your professional development.

Extracurricular Opportunities
Our major isn’t just about coursework. Our engaged majors participate in clubs and activities, attend conferences, and enthusiastically volunteer in our region.

The Physical Education Majors Club's community-related efforts build team skills and relationships as well as résumés. The Club has social events and actively raises funds so that every major can attend the North Carolina Alliance for Athletics, Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (NCAAHPERD) annual convention, an excellent place to make contacts for future employment and continue professional development.

Graduate Success
Our graduates are hired by public schools to teach physical education and/or coach in the schools’ athletics programs. Teaching positions are readily available to graduates in Western North Carolina, across the state and the Southeast, and beyond.

Graduation Criteria
To graduate with this major, you must maintain a 2.5 average and be admitted to the professional education program. Our outstanding advisers will help you navigate the complexities of scheduling, interning, and licensure. Visit our Teacher Education Handbook for more information.
